Supporting the whole student.Mike Merritt is a longtime middle school physical education teacher, student advocate, SEL leader, and athletics professional with a passion for helping young people grow in confidence, character, and leadership. His work centers on creating safe, structured, and meaningful environments where students are challenged, supported, and seen.
With more than 15 years of experience in education and youth development, Mike brings together physical education, social-emotional learning, sportsmanship, coaching, and school culture leadership. Whether he is teaching PE, supporting colleagues, mentoring athletes, leading professional learning, or officiating football, his focus remains the same: relationships, accountability, growth, and service.
Designing SEL lessons, advisory supports, reflection tools, and campus culture resources that help students build self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and social awareness.

Mike’s teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that physical education is more than sports and fitness. It is a powerful space for students to practice perseverance, communication, teamwork, respect, self-reflection, and leadership.
Mike is deeply involved in athletics as a coach, mentor, organizer, and football official. He values sports as a platform for teaching discipline, accountability, communication, emotional control, leadership, and sportsmanship.
